HOW TO PAINT A ROOF?

Painting a roof looks easy. It’s basically cleaning its surface, preparing it for painting, Applying a primer, then painting it with your choice of paint. You can apply multiple coats if desired. Easy, right? But you should leave roof painting to professionals. That’s because while it looks easy, painting roofs is risky. Sure, DIY is always an option but would you endanger yourself, especially if you don’t have the experience and knowledge to paint roofs?

That said, for your information and guidance, we outline below the steps in painting a roof.

Inspection. Check the roof for any damage that needs attention.

Cleaning. Clean the roof by washing it with water and mild detergent. For tougher stains, use a pressure washer. However, use the right pressure depending on the condition of your roof.

Repair. After cleaning the roof, repair/fix the damaged parts.

Primer Application. Apply a coat of primer suitable for your roof material. Let it dry completely.

Paint Application. With a brush, roller, or sprayer, paint the roof by starting at its edges, and working your way down. Cover the entire roof surface, including vents and chimneys.

Multiple Coat Application. If needed, or if you want a more vibrant-looking roof, apply additional coatings.

Let Dry. Leave the paint to dry completely. Drying time varies depending on the season, the weather, the paint type, and the roof material.

Inspect Again. Ensure that the entire roof has been painted evenly.

Sealant Application. Apply a coat of sealant to protect and extend the life of the painted roof and prevent it from peeling/cracking.

Paint Types

There are many types of paint you can use for your roof. Choose the one that’s suitable for your roof material. Below are some of the common paint types:

Acrylic. More durable than latex-based paints, is water resistant and protects the material from moisture. Plus, it dries quickly.

Oil-based. A great choice for house roofs exposed to heavy rain or snow. It dries more slowly but provides a stronger barrier against moisture.

Elastomeric. Highly flexible, it can stretch and contract without cracking and has great waterproofing properties. Perfect for flat roofs or roofs that move.

Silicone. Durable and weather-resistant, this paint is usually applied on metal roofs and provides up to 10 years of protection.

Paint Applicators

Brush. Use a paintbrush to paint roof edges and detailing. You can also use it to apply a sealant.

Roller. For wider coverage and even application, use a roller. It quickly and efficiently covers a large area. Ideal for roofs with relatively smooth surfaces.

Sprayer. For heavy, viscous paint coating, use a sprayer for cost-efficient and cost-effective roof coating.
