CAN YOU PAINT ROOF TILES?
Have your roof tiles painted by professionals at Hobart House Painter if you want your home’s roof tiles protected from the elements. When your roof tiles are painted professionally, their lifespan becomes longer, letting you enjoy a great-looking roof for many decades. The inherent protection that roof tiles provide is also enhanced when they are painted expertly, seemingly creating a barrier against the weather, UV rays, and even mould and algae growth, among other things.
Painting roof tiles usually observe the following steps: Cleaning, Priming, and Painting. Below are the details of every step on how to paint roof tiles.
Cleaning
Before painting your roof tiles, you need to prepare its surface by thoroughly cleaning it. Remove dirt, debris, leaves, etc. Use water and a mild detergent or a pressure washer to remove moulds, moss, etc. Be mindful of the pressure washer so as not to damage the tiles. Once cleaned and cleared, check the roof for cracked, broken, or loose tiles. Replace these and secure the ones that are loose. For discovered cracks and holes, patch them up using a sealant.
Priming
Select the best primer suitable for the type of roof tiles (terracotta, concrete, etc.) you have for proper paint adhesion and durability. Use a sprayer, brush, or roller (whatever is apt) to evenly coat all your roof tiles with the primer. Ensure that you cover all corners, edges, and hard-to-reach areas. Let the primer dry fully. It may take a few hours or a day.
Painting
Note that the use of a paint applicator such as spray, brush, or roller depends on which area to paint. For large surfaces, you can use a sprayer; for edges, small areas, and hard-to-reach spots, you can use rollers or brushes.
Apply the first coat evenly across all tiles, covering everything to ensure every tile is protected from the elements. Work in small sections to ensure you won’t miss an area. Start at the top and work the way down to avoid stepping on wet paint.
Let the first coat dry before applying a second coat. Once the first coat dries, apply the second coat to ensure that the painted surface is weatherproof and durable. Let the second coat dry for at least 24 to 48 hours. Again, inspect the roof tiles if the paint job is satisfactory.
Once the roof tiles have been painted, maintain their fresh look by having them inspected regularly—once a year will do—for wear and tear. Have the roof cleaned regularly and address minor issues as soon as possible to prolong the life of not only the paint but your roof tiles as well.
